Pearls

The Perfect Gift

Luster - Luster refers to a combination of surface shine and deep, almost three dimensional glow emanating from within the heart of the pearl.  The clearer and crisper the reflection, the more valuable the pearl.

Surface - Because cultured pearls are created by nature, it is rare to find a pearl that is completely free of any surface blemishes like pits, spots. or small bumps.  Still, the smaller and fewer the blemishes, the more valuable the pearl.

Shape - The rounder and more symmetrical a pearl is, the more valuable it is.  There are BAROQUE pearls, however, which are irregular in shape and can be very beautiful.

Color - Cultured pearls come in a variety of colors from rose' to black.  While the color of a pearl is really a matter of preference, some people feel rose' to silver/white pearls look better on fair skin tones and cream or gold toned pearls flatter darker complexions.  It is truly a matter of personal preferences, however.

Size - Cultured pearls are measured by their diameter in millimeters.  They can range from smaller than 1mm in the case of seed pearls to 20mm for a large South Sea pearl.  Other factors being equal, the larger the pearl, the more valuable it is.

Care - Cultured pearls should be the very last thing you put on when dressing - after your perfume and hairspray.  These contain chemicals which are harmful to the luster and nacre.  For the same reason, you should always store pearls by themselves.  Other jewelry can scratch or abrade the pearl surface.  They may be cleaned by wiping with a soft, clean, dry cloth.
